Study of 2010 Eruption of Merapi Volcano, Indonesia Using Alos Palsar Interferometry

چکیده
Mount Merapi is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia, and its most recent massive eruption was in November 2010, causing great loss of lives and assets. Land movement of the volcano and the regions around were known to be significant. One of the methods that can be used to monitor such motion is Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR). The Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images are acquired from the Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) Phased Array L-Band SAR (PALSAR) sensor, which managed to capture images of Mount Merapi before, during and after the eruption. The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer Global Digital Elevation Model (ASTER GDEM) was used as a reference topology in deriving the Differential InSAR (DInSAR). However, it is known that DInSAR has limited application when the land movement is too significant due to the wrapping of phases. Therefore, the interferograms of the volcano before and after the eruption were used to estimate the land movement for large changes, while the DInSAR method was used for changes less than half a meter to generate a complete land motion map of the volcano.

The Mount Merapi volcanic eruption in October 2010 was one of Indonesia's largest and most recent natural disasters. A cross-sectional study was undertaken to measure the psychosocial impact of the eruption on survivors in two locations in Yogyakarta, Java, Indonesia. The Impact of Event Scale Revised was used to assess participants' symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. Post-Traumatic St...

[1] We use 2007–2011 Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) data to perform an arc-wide interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) time series survey of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB) and to study time-dependent ground deformation of four Indonesian volcanoes selected following the 2007–2009 study of Chaussard and Amelung (2012). Our objectives are to examine whether arc volcano...

a r t i c l e i n f o Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) images reveal a pre-eruption deformation signal at Kizimen volcano, Kamchatka, Russia, where an ongoing eruption began in mid-November, 2010. The previous eruption of this basaltic andesite-to-dacite stratovolcano occurred in 1927–1928. InSAR images from both ascending and descending orbital passes of Envisat and ALOS PALSAR...

Introduction The October 2010 eruption of Mt Merapi (the most active volcano in the Indonesia that erupts at 5-years intervals) claimed 141 lives, injured 453 people and displaced at least 278,000 people. This geological event became a disaster as national and international agencies had to step in to assist the Yogyakarta Province and Sleman District Administrations in dealing with the devastat...
